1. Light Painting
Sequestered behind the curtains on the stage we will have a dark-ish space in which you can
try light painting techniques to take pics of people and/or props. I have some light painting
tools that can be used, but if you have anything suitable (small torches, LED lights, fairy
lights, light wands) that you think might come in handy, feel free to bring them along.
2. Still Life in a Light Box
I will bring my large home–made light box with top and sides replaced by sheets of tracing
paper. This allows still life subjects to be illuminated with diffuse light from different
directions. Bring you external flash if you have one, and if you have the gear to use the flash
remotely (either an extension lead or a wireless remote) be sure to pack that in your kit bag.
There will be some still life subjects available, but if you have any subjects you’d like to try
out please bring them along. We should be able to set this activity up in the alcove opposite
the kitchen.
3. Intentional Camera Movement
This exercise will take place in the main part of the hall. It involves using a slow shutter
speed while panning across a scene or tracking a moving subject. Or if you are using a zoom
lens, moving the zoom in or out while the shutter is open.
There will be a little booklet available on each of the above topics that might provide you with some
hints or inspiration.
So what do I need to bring along, I hear you ask?
Well, the obvious ones are:
a) Your camera (with battery charged and a memory card to spare)
b) Tripod if you have one (you might be able to borrow one if you don’t have your own)
c) External flash (with fully charged batteries) if you have one (for exercise #2)
Additionally you are welcome to bring any other equipment you have which you think might be
handy, such as:
• LED lights or fairy lights
• Reflectors
• Flash extension leads or remote triggers
• Interesting / colourful still life subjects
Otherwise, just come along prepared to get involved, have fun and learn while sharing ideas and
techniques. And if you’re happy to share equipment (lenses, flash, tripod, etc) then that’s fine too.
