Using paper to explore forms and shading
Paper is a great medium to use in photography. It is nominally:
- Cheap
- Easily modified
- Stable
- White or coloured
- Smooth or textured
- Of moderate size
(All of these statements of course can also be false.)
This means that it is relatively easy to use as a medium in many areas of art. In this session we will explore some of the opportunities to mix the craft of manipulating paper with the craft of taking photos. That is we will start to explore with very simple light sources:
- Paper’s physical attributes such as texture, weight, translucence, reflectivity and uniformity
- Compositional elements such as shape (form), shadows, lines, curves, negative space, leading lines, suggestion, repetition and pattern.
The session will focus more on different types of paper craft rather than a compositional discussion – but there will be plenty of examples. Be ready to get involved and bring the following:
- 2 pieces A4 copy paper (or equivalent)
- 1 A4 copy paper sheet cut to make a square
- A few clothes pegs or paper clips
- Tissue paper
- A hand or head torch
Ben will be introducing this topic via zoom. You can then spend the rest of the evening having a go yourself at home. A cluster group will be created so that we can share and discuss our efforts.
